Tesco Bags of Help grantsDeadline: Rolling programme – apply year-round

The money raised from the 5p bag charge in Tesco stores in England, Scotland and Wales is being used to support community participation in the development and use of open spaces.

Successful applicants will include those looking for grants to cover volunteer training, physical improvements of open spaces, equipment purchases, community events and sports and leisure activities.

Administration of the funding is being managed by Groundwork, which specialises in transforming communities and the local environment for the better – and Tesco will work with greenspace scotland to support successful projects in Scotland.

How it works . . .

  • Each month, three local community projects will be voted on in Tesco stores, across 200 regions in England, Scotland and Wales
  • In each region, the project that received the most votes from all stores in that region will receive a grant of up to £5,000.
  • The second placed project receives up to £2,000 and third placed up to £1,000
  • Every year, over 7,000 projects will receive funding through the Bags of Help scheme.

Along with many examples of gardening/growing schemes, here are some examples of arts-related projects which could receive funding:

  • Supporting an artist in residence to work with the community to develop an art trail
  • Supporting community-run summer leisure activities in parks.
  • Funding a series of summer events in a local park
