Established in 2018 Stirling Photography Festival’s mission is to develop skills, create opportunities and build relationships within its community. In 2019, the volunteer team grew from 6 to 13, encouraging the organisers to establish the festival as an annual event. They worked with Stirling Council to run a successful Crowdfunder and secured support from funders, venues, the University of Stirling and several local businesses and photographers.

Following feedback from 2018 participants, they extended the run of the festival to throughout August, running 24 events led by 26 photographers. They closed the festival with a public exhibition, showing 149 images from 86 exhibitors from across the world. Images were showcased across Stirling’s cultural hubs and in local coffee shops, while creative partnerships were forged with photographers and galleries in other cities.

"Stirling Photography Festival is truly volunteer-led,” says co-founder Janie Meikle Bland. “Our volunteers create the festival around their passions, interests and skills, so building an exciting festival programme. “Our team is very diverse, ranging from high school students to young executives, university students to retired professionals; they come from Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Germany – all adding to the diversity and inclusivity of our programme. The one thing we all share is a passion and an ambition for Stirling and to create a fun, inclusive and accessible festival.”
