Deadline for applying: Monday 29 June 2026 at 5pm
Area: Birmingham

Shelanu, which means ‘belonging to us’, is a collective of migrant and refugee women working with Craftspace to develop craft skills, confidence and well-being through social enterprise.

They produce high quality craft inspired by their new home, the city of Birmingham and their experiences of migration. As well as learning new making skills, the women are supported to improve their English, learn business skills and run workshops for the community.

The organisation is currently seeking a volunteer. Working alongside Shelanu's Exhibitions and Projects Development Manager, you will be:

  • Reviewing and making new stock for Shelanu's Migrating Birds, Interlocking Stories and Nurture jewellery collections;
  • Preparing equipment and materials for sessions and external workshops;
  • Supporting members with making activities;
  • Documenting sessions on social media;
  • Assisting with materials inventory and ordering;
  • Assisting with planning tasks.

The volunteer will get the chance to work with a friendly, established visual arts team in Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter, learn about event planning and preparation, learn different craft techniques and processes, and support migrant and refugee women in learning new skills and building their confidence.

Time commitment: Thursdays, 11.30am - 5.30pm. It's important to build continuity and relationships for the Shelanu members, however, there is some flexibility to the role.

Local travel costs will be covered and free refreshments offered.
