Robin Simpson will step down from his role as Chief Executive in May 2026, to enjoy retirement.

Robin SimpsonRobin has led Creative Lives, the UK and Ireland-wide organisation that champions community and volunteer-led creative activity, since 2005.

During his tenure, there has been a dramatic shift in recognition for ‘everyday creativity’ and the benefits it brings to both people and communities. Everyday creativity - the creative activities people take part in during their own time and in their own communities - is now widely acknowledged as a powerful driver of social connection, wellbeing, and community cohesion, as well as being an inherent good in its own right.  Under Robin’s leadership Creative Lives has delivered impactful large-scale projects, research initiatives, nationally recognised festivals, and its showcase celebration of local creativity, the Creative Lives Awards.

Reflecting on his time with the organisation, Robin said: “When I joined Creative Lives (then known as the Voluntary Arts Network) everyday creativity was often dismissed as a nice-to-have hobby. Today, it's increasingly recognised by governments, local authorities and communities for the role it plays in reducing isolation, giving voice to neglected communities and building civic pride and identity.

“I'm immensely proud of the role Creative Lives has played in championing local creative groups and demonstrating the profound impact they have on their communities. With growing policy recognition of the importance of grassroots creativity, this is an incredibly exciting moment for someone new to lead Creative Lives through the next part of its journey.”

Gavin Stride, Chair of Creative Lives, said: “Robin has been a tireless champion for the benefits of creativity in everyone's lives. It is a measure of his skill and care that he leaves Creative Lives in such good health. The whole board is hugely grateful for the leadership and organisational rigour Robin has shown to develop Creative Lives as an authoritative voice for everyday creativity.”

Creative Lives will now begin the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive, to lead the next stage of its development.
