Current work Local projects National Blue Plaques scheme - East of England Creative Lives is working on a new project to widen the diversity of people and histories memorialised by Historic England's National Blue Plaques scheme in the East of England. This work has a specific focus on those whose histories are typically less well-recognised: women, those from minority ethnic groups, LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, and working-class people. We know that local creative groups already work to research, celebrate and recognise the brilliant and diverse histories of their places. We’re in direct contact with many local groups across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, but are keen to open up nominations as widely as possible. Please use the form below to tell us about people, events and histories that you'd like to see recognised via a Blue Plaque in the East of England. You can complete the form as an individual or on behalf of a group. The formal criteria for a Blue Plaque require that: 1. A person must have made an important contribution to human welfare or happiness, and/or have made an exceptional impact in their field, community or on society at large. 2. All figures proposed for commemoration must have died at least 20 years ago. Groups, duos, societies and organisations may also be considered for a joint plaque. Animals and fictitious characters will not be considered.3. Proposals can also be considered for the commemoration of buildings that have a historical significance of public interest, for example because a historical event of particular importance occurred there.4. A national blue plaque would not normally be considered for someone who is already commemorated by a plaque in the town or city in which they have been nominated. A national blue plaque would be considered if a person has been recognised only through other forms of commemoration, such as statues, place names, or perhaps if a plaque has been put up by private individuals.
