Lift the Lid aims to raise awareness of creativity and cultural participation for young people in Leeds through a targeted programme of activity.

The work will focus on the benefits of taking part in creative activity such as poetry, creative writing and music to improve wellbeing. Lift the Lid will also shine a light on creative activity for and by young people via BBC Radio Leeds on shows that attract 196,000+ listeners. The project has two areas of focus that will span across two years.

Outreach work

In summer 2021 we will engage young people from Harehills, Chapeltown and Seacroft in poetry workshops led by local artists Matt Abbott and Testament. These will explore themes such as youth identity and self expression. We will also run  a series of podcast making workshops to document young people's stories. In 2022 we will turn our attention to music and working with young people and local musicians all in partnership with BBC Radio Leeds.

Radio Broadcast

We will raise awareness of creative and cultural activity for young people in Leeds via a range of features on BBC Radio Leeds that showcase stories, new voices and new  activities across the whole City.

Jane Chesworth is the producer based at BBC Radio Leeds and will be the lead on this project one day a week. She would welcome any ideas or thoughts via: [email protected]
