Formed in Manchester in early 2016, The Sunday Boys embarked on their first large-scale project in the summer of 2017 when they performed 50 Years of Change to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act 1967, which initiated the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality. They are an open access, gay male choir who have quickly established themselves as a popular community group.

50 Years of Change saw the group performing music by a range of LGBTQI+ composers from throughout history, including Benjamin Britten, Poulenc and Queen, and also commission three new works written by composers who identify as LGBTQI+. One commissioned piece was by an established composer and two were by early career composers based in Manchester. Almost 200 people attended the concert at Halle St Peters in central Manchester in July 2017 before the show toured to Bury Art Gallery and Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

The project brought the 31 members of the choir together as a community to work together towards a common goal and engaged a diverse audience across Manchester and beyond in celebrating an important milestone in equal rights.
