Roscommon Solstice Choir< Back to Shortlist

Forming a temporary choir to perform at a series of charity concerts seemed like a good idea but the success and enjoyment that the choir brought to so many people meant that continuing the Roscommon Solstice Choir on a permanent basis was an even better idea!

Initially formed in 2013, with the aim of raising money for charities at the Roscommon Solstice Concerts, the group has continued to flourish under the direction of Eimear and Andrew Reynolds. Raising over €120,000 in its first year, the choir then decided to go international in 2015 with a trip to London to perform in aid of Acton Homeless Concern. Over 90 members paid to travel to London and the concert raised over £5,000. Unsurprisingly, they were invited to come back!

2016 saw the choir stage a joint production with Roscommon Drama Group as part of the 1916 centenary celebrations. ‘A Nation Once Again’ was performed to sold-out audiences for three nights at Roscommon Arts Centre in April. Further fundraising concerts were held in June/July and in December and the group were awarded a runner-up place in the Pride of Place Awards in Belfast, having been nominated by Roscommon County Council.

“The volunteer members offer their time and money to do what they enjoy for the benefit of others who are less well off than they. A wonderful musical community reaching out to others!”
