RicNicRicNic is a youth-led theatre model, born out of an initiative at a school in Winchester in 2004. RicNic was established by a group of 16 year old students who wanted to stage a musical at their school which had a theatre, but no annual production. The students were given access to the theatre over summer and fundraised to cover the production costs. They staged the show for a ticketed audience, and paved the way for the annual summer production. The project has since grown, and is now housed at the Theatre Royal Winchester. In 2018 RicNic staged 3 musicals across the South East and celebrated their 14th year in Winchester, 7th in Oxford and 2nd in London. Each summer three companies of young people aged 16-21 are given full responsibility for their production, and the initiative has seen over 1000 young people involved in RicNic so far.
