Ricefield Arts & Cultural Centre is a community-led charitable organisation in Glasgow, that delivers original Chinese arts and cultural experiences. On Sunday 22 July, Ricefield hosted Glasgow’s first ever Kite Festival, as part of Festival 2018, the cultural programme for the Glasgow 2018 European Championships. A celebration of kite-flying, the event was inspired by the kite’s long history - from ancient China to today.

Over 40 volunteers ran the event, teaching festival-goers how to make their own kites following traditional methods. This free festival was attended by an estimated 5,000 people from Glasgow’s diverse communities. In the busy kite-making marquee, visitors created the bamboo frame, prepared their kite shape then decorated it creativity. The final step was to add a tail and spool, before launching the finished kite into the sky.

All the volunteers spent many hours of time, effort, commitment and passion planning the event from scratch, and bringing a positive impact to local communities. The festival was hugely successful, and Ricefield hopes to run it again. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive:
