Killin Music Festival< Back to Shortlist

The Killin Music Festival in Central Scotland started in 2016, run by a group of passionate volunteers.

In 2017, the group booked a strong line-up of artists to perform including Skerryvore, Rura and Dougie MacLean, with tickets selling out weeks in advance.

They engaged with local groups, organising regular singing classes for primary school children which led to the Kid's Choir supporting the adult choir at the festival – and young people from the high school pipe band also featured on the main stage, with some asked to guest with the professional bands.

The festival office and session tent was based in the local sports pavilion grounds – a space donated to the group in exchange for one of the volunteers building the pavilion a new website. They also worked with a local historian to create a heritage talk, focused on music.

As a testament to its success, Killin was a finalist in the Event of the Year category at the 2017 BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards.
