Art4SpaceArt4Space and the residents of Roupell Park Estate in Brixton, South London, worked together over a year to transform the Community Centre at the heart of the estate through mosaic. Working with local youth groups, activity groups and other networks, more than 200 residents and 100 volunteers were involved in making an 11 metre mosaic and ceramic mural for the exterior walls. The final piece was designed from local children’s drawings and involved more than 20,000 mosaic pieces - and required 14 whole kiln firings for ceramics! The project was supported by funding from Veolia, CEF Lyncx and volunteers from Burberry and Beacon design company. The workshops, design and completion of the mural brought together residents and volunteers and helped to build relationships, pride and skills, with some participants moving on to new employment opportunities through the project. Most of all it placed the creative contributions of the residents at the centre of their estate.

“This has been an amazing experience watching the transformation, I am proud to live here now”. - Project participant and resident of Roupell Park Estate
