Exploring local creativity in Dunfermline, in partnership with On Fife

Creative Lives worked with On Fife (the cultural trust in Fife) to deliver a place-based project in Dunfermline, Scotland.

Phase one involved mapping of the local cultural groups and a series of stakeholder interviews.

We found that:

  • Dunfermline's creative ecology is characterised by a strong heritage of long-established groups.
  • There is a concentration of more traditional clubs and societies in the city centre, compared to more informal networks of everyday creativity in outlying wards and new housing areas.
  • There are active hubs with good cultural infrastructure around central community venues, faith centres and heritage sites.
  • Significant developmental support is needed for local cultural groups, focussed on attracting new members, sustaining volunteers, marketing/promotion, and financial sustainability, often challenged by issues like community asset transfer.
