group of people around a table

Cardiff Museum Drawing Group is a diverse range of people from varying backgrounds, with a broad range of experience from professionals to beginners. The group meets at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff on a Tuesday lunchtime to draw museum exhibits and discuss their work, materials and techniques afterwards over coffee.

The group was initiated in early 2019 and has been meeting every week since. During the pandemic the group was unable to meet at the museum but kept going via Zoom and had weekly and monthly drawing challenges, arranged via WhatsApp and Instagram.

When restrictions eased, the group met outdoors to draw in venues including Cardiff Castle and Cardiff’s arcades. Now the group is back at the museum, engaging once more in communal creative activity, which has included visits to the museum’s stores. Without any funding or central co-ordination, the group members all take part in promoting their work and organising other drawing meetups and exhibitions, including an exhibition in the Hearth Gallery in Barry Hospital.

“The group has provided the opportunity to meet new people and make friends whilst motivating a shared passion for drawing and creativity that has, for many of us, informed and encouraged other creative endeavours beyond the group sessions.” Julia Allen, Cardiff Museum Drawing Group."
