Deadline: 2 April 2023

As part of Shaper/Caper’s upcoming production, Small Town Boys, a dance and spoken word piece about the impact of the AIDS crisis and Section 28 on queer communities in the 1980s, the organisation is recruiting a community cast of volunteers to dance alongside their professional dancers in the show.

No dance experience is needed, as training will be provided – the only requirement is that participants must be based in Dundee or local, and aged over 18.

Choreographed by Shaper/Caper’s award-winning choreographer and Artistic Director, Thomas Small, ‘Small Town Boys’ transports us back to the days of the 1980s AIDS crisis, exploring its impact on queer communities both then and now. Through contemporary
dance and verbatim spoken word, ‘Small Town Boys’ gives a voice to the silenced and breathes life back into memories of the time.

The show features a 1980s soundtrack and will be performed in nightclub spaces by 6 dancers, as well as the community cast. Cast members will need to be based in Dundee, and able to commit to a total of 6 rehearsals across April-July and a minimum of 3 performances from 8th-12th August. This is a volunteer role, with no dance experience needed. They are particularly keen to hear from dancers who identify as LGBTQ+.
